If you’ve ever wondered why someone would read the Book of Mormon—or what it actually teaches about Jesus Christ—you’re not alone.
Some people assume it teaches about a different Jesus.
Others think Christ barely appears in its pages at all.
But the truth is this:
The Book of Mormon is centered on Jesus Christ—in the best possible way.
In fact, it testifies of Him so boldly and clearly that many who read it come away with a deeper understanding of His love, His sacrifice, and His role as our Savior.
Today, I want to share why people read the Book of Mormon and give specific examples of how it teaches about Jesus Christ.
Why the Book of Mormon?
Joseph Smith once said:
“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”
That is a bold statement.
So what makes the Book of Mormon different?
It explains its purpose clearly:
“We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ… that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”
There is no subtlety here.
The message is direct.
The focus is clear.
The Book of Mormon is about Jesus Christ.
A Bold Testimony of Christ
In the Old Testament, learning about the Savior often requires searching through symbols, shadows, and prophetic imagery.
The Book of Mormon takes a different approach.
It speaks plainly and boldly about Jesus Christ.
In Alma chapter 7, we learn that Christ would:
Suffer pains, afflictions, and temptations of every kind
Take upon Himself sickness, weakness, and death
Do all of this so He could personally understand how to help His people
This teaches a powerful truth:
Christ doesn’t just save us from afar—He understands us from experience.
He knows what it feels like to struggle.
He knows heartbreak, pain, exhaustion, fear, and grief.
And because He knows, He can heal.
The Climax: Christ Appears in the Americas
The central event of the Book of Mormon is the resurrected Savior appearing to the people in the Americas.
In 3 Nephi, Jesus invites the people to come forward—one by one—to feel the wounds in His hands, feet, and side.
This moment is deeply personal.
Not symbolic.
Not distant.
Not abstract.
One by one, each individual feels undeniable proof that He lives.
Then He says:
“My bowels are filled with compassion toward you.”
He invites the sick, the injured, and the afflicted to come to Him—and He heals them.
Every one.
This is a Savior who notices suffering.
This is a Savior who responds with mercy.
Written for Our Day
It was written for our time. Its message is simple and powerful:
Jesus Christ:
Took upon Himself pain
Overcame death
Offers healing, hope, and redemption to all who come to Him
Its purpose is not to replace the Bible—but to stand beside it as another witness of Christ.
How Can You Know If It’s True?
So how can someone know whether the Book of Mormon is true?
The Bible gives a familiar answer:
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” — James 1:5
The Book of Mormon extends the same invitation.
It encourages readers to:
Read
Ponder
Pray
And then ask God, in the name of Christ, if the book is true.
With a sincere heart and real intent, it promises that God will answer through the power of the Holy Ghost.
A Personal Experience
I served a Latter-day Saint mission in Puerto Rico. For two years, I introduced people to the Book of Mormon and invited them to accept this simple challenge found in Moroni chapter 10.
That invitation didn’t come from missionaries.
It came from an ancient prophet named Moroni:
“When ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true… and by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”
I watched people pray.
I watched people receive answers.
And I watched lives change.
Moroni and Prophecy
According to the Book of Mormon, Moroni later returned as an angel to deliver the ancient record to Joseph Smith.
This moment echoes a prophecy found in the book of Revelation:
“I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth.”
The message remains the same:
Fear God.
Give Him glory.
Worship the Creator.
Final Invitation
The Book of Mormon contains the gospel of Jesus Christ.
It teaches:
Who He is
What He did
And how we can come unto Him
